Asphalt typically starts with a lower installed cost and broad installer availability. Metal generally requires a larger initial investment but may offer a longer service horizon when coatings, flashings, movement, and maintenance are handled correctly.
Exposure and building fit
Metal can be attractive for snow, rural properties, rain shedding, and some solar attachment methods. Asphalt can be practical for complex residential roofs and budget-conscious replacement. Neither material compensates for weak deck, ventilation, or flashing work.
Questions for bidders
For metal, ask about panel gauge, coating, clip or fastener system, expansion, closures, penetrations, and snow retention. For shingles, ask about product line, starter, ridge, valleys, underlayment, ventilation, and wind installation.
